Evaluating Diverse Literature

This flow chart provides you with criteria to think about when evaluating books to add to your classroom library.

 

*Disclaimer: This is not a one-size-fits-all criteria. When evaluating books, use this as a guideline to support your best judgement. The needs of your classroom may not match the needs of another.

Criteria 

  • The book should accurately portray the culture, disability, gender or experience

  • The book should not portray a stereotype.

  • The characters should be believable and authentic.

  • Illustrations should be authentic. They should represent the characters and experiences accurately and unbiasedly.

  • The book should be appropriate for the grade level.

  • The book should be published within the last 10 years.

  • The book should not be an experience that is already represented in the library heavily while others are not.
