Below, you will find lesson plans and activities. Lessons have been created based on Kindergarten Common Core Standards. 

Book: How Do You Say?/Como se dice? by Angela Dominguez

Standard: CC.1.2.K.L: Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding.

About: This lesson centers around a bilingual book by Angela Dominguez. Students interact with every day language to realize that although we may speak different languages, we can still be friends.  

Books: Name Jar by Yangsook Choi and Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal

Standard: CC.1.2.K.I: With prompting and support, identify basic similarities and differences between two texts (read or read aloud) on the same topic.

About: In this two day lesson, students are read two stories about young girls who feel negatively about their name. Their names are special to their families and their culture. Students compare and contrast the books and complete "The Story of My Name" activity.

Books: The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds

Standard: CC.1.4.K.O Describe experiences and events.

About: In this lesson, students will practice using adjectives to describe something. After reading The Dot, students create their own dot and choose six adjectives to describe it. 

Books: ​ The Girl Who Thought in Pictures by Julia Finely Mosca and Malala’s Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai

Standard: CC.1.4.K.A: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts.

About: Read diverse biographies as mentor texts for student writing. 

Books: ​ The Word Collector by Peter H. Reynolds

Standard: CC.1.1.K.D Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. Read grade-level high-frequency sight words with automaticity.

About: After reading The Word Collector, students collect sight words just like the main character collected all words. They practice reading and writing sight words.
